What is a Palak Puri?

Also called alternatively as Spinach puri, palak puri is an unleavened deep-fried bread made with wheat flour and spinach puree. The latter is the prime ingredient that sets it apart from a normal puri and gives it a beautiful deep green colour that complements any side dish you pair the pooris with. Spinach in itself is quite a nutritious vegetable. It is home to several integral vitamins and minerals that support growth and development. Moreover, this vegetable delivers a mild earthy flavour when combined with different spices in the palak puri recipe, making for a delectable dish. These palak pooris can be best served with cool raitas, tangy chutney or even indulgent curries and warm lentil soups like dal.

Cooking Tips For Palak Puri

  • Avoid overcooking your spinach. The aim is to blanch them ever so gently for about a minute or two. We wouldn’t want to miss out on its vibrant colour now, would we?

  • Knead the dough until it is soft and smooth. This allows for the pooris to be more airy and less dense after frying.

  • You may always add additional spices such as carom seeds (ajwain), turmeric powder, red chilli powder and cumin powder to your palak puris. Remember to adjust these spice levels to suit your spice tolerance and tastes.

Palak pooris are a delight to add to your dinner parties owing to their vibrant green colour and wholesome flavours. If you have a little one at home, you may entice them with a variation of cheese palak puri as well. So be it the elderly, the young ones and the rest of the adults, you may always spruce up your regular poori with this palak puri within minutes. So, why wait?
