PREVENTION OR CURE

My grandmother lived hale and hearty till the age of 82! She did not have a single lifestyle disease like diabetes, hypertension or obesity. My father on the other hand, even though he has the same genes, has diabetes. Every day, at my nutrition clinic, I see streams of people walking in to bring a change in their food habits. Most walk in because of the diktat given by their doctor - “Lose weight, eat with a plan and go to a nutritionist”. However, there is another set of people who do not wait for the doctors to give them advice. These are the individuals who believe that they are in charge of their own health.

I like to call these two sets as the PAIN client and the VAIN client. The pain client when hit by a lifestyle disease fights the journey of bringing about a change in his lifestyle and it involves several modifications to the diet he eats. This is an extremely difficult task as we all eat out of our love for food with recipes handed down over generations.

The problem with these recipes is that they have not kept pace with today’s slower lifestyle. A lifestyle where everything is at the tip of our fingers be it from booking a cab on an app to pressing the button for the elevator thus leading to physical inactivity.

What is the vain client like – the vain client has seen the older generation get hospitalized, go for medical checkups and lose out on their hard earned money to the need of constant medical care. So he tells himself “That’s not going to be me!” and makes an effort to alter his lifestyle. He wakes up to a glass of lemon water with honey, carries dry fruits and pumpkin seeds to work, parks his car a kilometer away from office just to walk that distance and finally eats clean and healthy. He/she is the version 2.2 of his family – who believes in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The learning here is that we should start by making smaller changes and slowly incorporate them in our lives. We should let food be the medicine instead of medicines becoming our food!

Prevention is a lazy word, taking charge of what one eats is the new definition of prevention. And we should start this right now because beyond a certain age it becomes difficult to incorporate changes in one’s food habits.
